ULYSSES -- Lawrence Steen, 86, of Ulysses, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Oct. 29, 1923, in Elkhart, to John and Kate Eskew Steen. He grew up in Ulysses and graduated from Grant County Rural School. He had lived in Ulysses since moving from Copeland in the 1930s.
On July 19, 1959, he married Patricia "Pat" Getty in Downs.
Mr. Steen worked for George Walters and Vic Barbo and retired from Mesa Petroleum as a gas dispatcher. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, surviving the sinking of the USS St. Lo Carrier on Oct. 25, 1944, in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The USS St. Lo received the Presidential Unit Citation for the heroism of her crew. He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball, coached Little League baseball and was a Detroit Tigers fan. A carpenter, he built a house for he and his wife.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sisters, Arline Isley of Ulysses, and Doris Roberts of Fairview, Okla.; and 18 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ulysses Cemetery, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post No. 79.
Memorials are suggested to Grant County Senior Center or the donor's choice, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS 67880.
