James Floyd Arnold
James Floyd Arnold, 19, popular young Bedford horseman and former drum major for the high school band, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Dennis Arnold on East John Street, on Wednesday morning, January 19. He had been taken to the hospital in December for an appendectomy, but was found to be suffering from an incurable ailment.
Jimmy, as he was known to his friends throughout the community, was a cheerful led who had a smile for everyone despite the fact that he was afflicted with a partial paralysis of his arms.
His first love was horses and he rode whenever the occasion offered. He became the impromptu trainer of a number of horses owned in Bedford and frequently exercised horses at the Arandale Hotel when their owners were to busy or were away. He frequented horse shows where he rode with distinction in several important events. Strangely enough, his wrist affliction was an asset in his handling of horses.
He was an outstanding drum major for the Bedford high school band and won the applause of the audience by his skillful twirling of his baton.
Jimmy Arnold was born in Bedford on February 16, 1929, a son of William Dennis and Dorothy E. (Donahoe) Arnold. Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister, Virginia, at home.
He was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church where the last rites were performed Saturday morning by Rev. Father F. A. Magee. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery by the Pate Funeral Home.
