Sister Barbara Ann Schoren, dedicated educator and religious
Individuals who knew her recall Sister Barbara Ann Schoren as a kind and dedicated teacher and parish minister. They also remember her fondness for turtles and her impressive assortment of turtle collectables. The gentle and soft-spoken minister died August 17 at Regina Health Center in Richfield where she had been in residence since March 2013. She was 80.
Barbara Ann was born February 4, 1936, the youngest of four children of Doctor William (the ?best dentist in the world?) and Charlotte (Feyock) Schoren. Within months of her 1954 graduation from Notre Dame High School she joined the Ursuline community from St. Charles Parish, Parma. She professed final vows in August 1960.
She earned an undergraduate degree in education from St. John College. Her ministry career included 41 years as a teacher in schools throughout the diocese, with tenures at St. Timothy (Garfield Heights), St. Paul (Euclid), St. Charles (Parma), St. Joseph (Avon Lake), St. Mary Magdalene (Willowick), St. Mary (Collinwood), St. Catherine (Cleveland), St. Francis de Sales (Parma), and St. Ann schools.
After retiring from the classroom, Sister Barbara Ann returned to school and earned a Master of Arts in Ministry degree from Ursuline College and accepted a position as Director of Religious Education at St. Luke Parish in Lakewood. She retired in 2007.
Sister Barbara Ann?s final ministry was the care she extended fellow Ursuline Sister Claudia Klyn, with whom she shared a room at Regina Health Center. Their shared space allowed for the display of Sister Barbara Ann?s turtle collection and for Sister Claudia?s array of stuffed animals. Sister Barbara Ann assisted her wheelchair-bound roommate to meals, to Mass and to activities. The two prayed morning and evening prayer together each day, and could often be found watching television in companionable silence. When Sister Claudia?s earthly journey drew to a close, Sister Barbara Ann was at her bedside.
Sister Barbara Ann will be remembered for her kindness, for her easy conversation and for the generous service she rendered to Sister Claudia. She was a committed religious, a dedicated teacher, a loving sister and loyal friend.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Phyllis Schoren of Florida, nephews, nieces and cousins.
Donations in her name may be made to the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland.
