Jacob Fliginger
Birth: Mar. 20, 1838
Death: Mar. 10, 1918
Reno County
Kansas, USA
Jacob Fliginger, was 36 years old when he left a village in Volhynia, Russia with his family and a group of Russian Mennonites. When Russia changed their policy of not exempting them from the military service, they decided to leave for America where they would still be exempt.
The three Fliginger brothers, Jacob, Joseph and Jonathan and their families, together with the Albrecht family stopped in Adams County, Indiana because their funds were exhausted. The others continued westward to Illinois, South Dakota, and Kansas.
Intriguing to imagine their adventurous voyage. From Russia they went to Hamburg, Germany from where they sailed to Hull, England. They then went by rail to Liverpool from where they sailed on the "City of Richmond" to New York City. After landing Aug. 31, 1874, the colony started West by train to be housed and placed by Mennonite Church boards in Mennonite communities. There was an immigration center in Halstead, Kansas.
In my readings, when the Mennonites were being persecuted in Europe, Russia opened their doors and encouraged them to farm. The family tree shows four generations lived in Russia.
Jacob was the son of Christian Fliginger and Maria Schwartz.
Christian was the son of Andreas Fliginger and Anna Mundelin.
Jacob and Barbara had nine children in Russia and four children in Indiana.
