Gary G. Handschumacher, 67, of Marietta, passed away Thursday (March 8, 2012). Gary was born in Canton, Ohio, to Harry and Mildred (Smithberger) Handschumacher
He was preceded in death by his father, Hank; and step-daughter, Ronda Manley.
Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara; daughter, Amy Lynn Handschumacher; son, Alex Jackson Handschumacher; and step-daughter, Rebecca (Dale) Schaad, all of Marietta. Step-grandchildren: Jessica Sebring (T J McGlumphy), Seath Sebring and Rachel Sebring, all of the Marietta area. His mother, Mildred of Warner; his twin brother, Larry (Jane) Handschumacher of Beverly; sister, Carolyn Sidwell of Greensboro, N.C.; and brother, Terry (Pam) Handschumacher of Bridgeport, W.Va. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be greatly missed by his adopted cat, Smokey.
Gary was a barber in Marietta for 45 years after attending Andrews Barber College in Columbus, Ohio. He was a well known athlete in basketball and baseball at Salem Liberty High school and played ball on several local teams following school. He was in the Army Enlisted Reserves during the Viet Nam Era. He was a member of American Legion Post 64 and greatly enjoyed golfing, traveling and playing cards.
A special thank you to the hospice team for the loving care and comfort during his illness and to the many family members and friends who provided support.
Gary donated his body to science. A memorial service will be held at a later date with military services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Post 64, P.O. Box 16, Marietta or to the Alzheimer's Association National Office, 1218 Market St., Parkersburg 26101.
