Birth: Apr. 12, 1864 Death: Oct. 25, 1918 Mathias, an only child was born in Katharinental, Odessa, Russia. There he met and married Katherine "Katy" Boehm in 1891. While still in Russia, they had their first child, George. He died the following year. Soon afterwards they set off to America with other family members to escape the Russian's broken promises made to his family when they were recruited from Germany to Russia years before his birth. His Intention to Become a Citizen states they arrived in April 1891. They first settled in Richardton, Stark, North Dakota near other extended family members. After arrival, he "Americanized" his name to Matthew "Matt." In one census, he is listed as Martin. While in North Dakota, he filed his Declaration of Intent to become a Citizen of the United States in October of 1892. The family became US citizens on the 19th of June 1902 while in North Dakota. In 1893 their first US born, a son Adam. Adam was followed by five more North Dakota born children. One of the extended family members traveled to Montana and returned with news of jobs in the coal mines. The packed up again and headed west to Carbon county Montana sometime between 1910 and 1914. They leased a coal mine where he and some of the children worked. Two more children were born after they arrived in Montana. According to his daughter and a daughter in law, Mathias had a team of horses, plowed others' fields, hauled things and was a day laborer. He was not able to always work due to his health. Mathias passed away before the birth of his youngest daughter in 1918.
