David Brosz Obituary
The funeral for David Brosz, 92, of Leola, SD was held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 30, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Leola with the Rev. Raymond Pomplun officiating.
Burial was in the Green Mound Cemetery at Leola under the direction of Miller-Huebel Funeral Home of Aberdeen, SD.
He died Tuesday, October 27, 1992, at the Colonial Manor in Ipswich, SD.
David Brosz was born March 7, 1900, to Martin and Helen W. (Schlechter) Brosz Sr. in Moscow Township, McPherson County, near Martell, SD. The family moved to Leola, SD in 1908 and he attended school in the first brick building in town. At a young age he helped his older brother at the livery barn and for the Gross and Mankoff Grocery Store. He also helped his parents at the hotel.
In 1916 he attended the Grand Island, Neb. Business College. In 1917 he taught school in Berdorf Township near Long Lake, SD. In 1919 he began working for the grocery store at Mina, SD for two years. In 1921 he began working for his brother-in-law at Four Brothers Market in Aberdeen, SD. He returned to Leola in 1923 and started the Brosz Brothers General Merchandise Store and Cream Station.
In December 1928 he married Dorothea Dusel from Tolstoy, SD. They moved the cream station to the Brosz Hotel. In 1941 they started the Red Owl Store in Leola, and it was the first self-service store in Leola. They also sold Watkins Products for about seven years. In 1958 they became owners of the Brosz Hotel. She died October 15, 1976.
On March 7, 1979, he married Hulda (Klingman) Fuehrer at Aberdeen, SD. They continued to live in Leola until this past month, when he became a resident of the Colonial Manor at Ipswich.
He was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church in Leola, served on the church council and held all offices but one. He was a member of the Leola City Council for about 15 years.
Survivors include his wife, Hulda, of Leola, SD; one daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Joyce) Heibel of Monmouth, OR: one stepson, Raymond Fuehrer of Helena, MT; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Joseph (Pauline) Fischer of Aberdeen, SD; and Mrs. Martin (Frances) Ketterling of Bismarck, ND; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren and 10 step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, five brothers and three sisters.
Honorary casketbearers were the Leola Senior Citizens group.
Casketbearers were Albert Erdman, Clarence Zantow and John J. Rath all of Leola, Edwin Brosz of Kulm, ND, Art Brosz of Jamestown, ND and Harold Vaughan of Aberdeen, SD.
Ushers were Lee Kindelspire and Norman Tschappat.
The organist was Marilyn Casey. The special music was Rodney and Mavis Brosz, Lloyd and Beverly Bender and the Leola Senior Citizens Singing Choir.
