  [S927] Obituary. Newspaper article, December 30, 1916 Mrs. Wachtel Killed By Automobile Truck. Skull Fractured When She Is Run Down At Second And Oak While attempting to cross the street at Second and Oak streets at 9:15 o'clock yesterday after alighting from a north bound street car. Mrs. Josephine Wachtel, 60 years old was struck by an automobile belonging to John P. Morton & Co. and driven by William Kirtley, 18 years old. Her skull was fractured at the base and she died 30 minutes later at city hospital. Kirtley was taken to the Sixth district police station and charged with murder. He was later taken to the county jail. Mrs. Wachtel was proprietor of a laundry at 2624 Greenwood Ave. The truck was northbound following closely behind the car. After the car stopped Kirtley drove around on the left side. Mrs. Wachtel was struck before Kirtley could apply the brakes. She was hurled twenty feet. Passengers on the (street) car carried her into the St Ives apartments where she was attended by Dr. M. Douglas Abell. She was taken to the hospital in a police machine. A son, George Wachtel, and a daughter, Mrs. Edward Schaefer, survive.
