Obituary for Joseph George Smeltzer
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph George Smeltzer, 82 of Newark, will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, with Reverend Bob Penhallurick officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery with the Licking County Veteran?s Alliance providing Military Honors.
Joseph was born in New Lexington, Ohio on June 3, 1928 to the late John Ambrose and Rose (Metzger) Smeltzer. He passed away at Newark Heathcare Centre on Friday, November 5, 2010.
Prior to retirement, Joseph worked at the Owens Corning Tech Center as a technician for 30 years. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a devout member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Owens Retiree Club and the American Legion Post #85 in Newark. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and watching sporting events, especially the Cleveland Browns and Indians.
Surviving are his four children, Chris (Cheryl) Smeltzer of Zanesville, Peg Gulker of Hilliard, Thomas (Sue) Smeltzer of Newark and Rosemary Smeltzer of Nashville, TN; brothers, Richard (Tillie) Smeltzer, Ted (Mary Lou) Smeltzer; sisters, Pauline Richards and Helen Moyer; grandchildren, Angela Smeltzer, Jennifer (Mike) Lyons, Andrew (Amanda) Smeltzer, Brittany Gulker, Tom Gulker, Michael Smeltzer, Stephanie Gulker and Ryan Smeltzer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Cornett) Smeltzer in 2003, whom he married on April 16, 1955; sister, Ruth Gordon; and brothers, James, Donald and John Smeltzer.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Joseph to St. Francis de Sales Church, 66 Granville Street, Newark, Ohio 43055.
