Mettler, Helen C.
Eureka - Funeral service for Helen C. Mettler, 74, of Eureka will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka. The Rev. Dean Nelson and the Rev. Dianne Rood-Kiesz will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Eureka. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. She died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at home. Helen C. Ottenbacher, daughter of William and Christina (Heiser) Ottenbacher was born on Feb. 9, 1930, on the family farm west of Eureka in Campbell County, S.D. This is where she grew up while attending country school. She helped on the family farm. Her family was very musical and she played the piano while her siblings played other instruments. She was united in marriage to Robert Mettler on June 20, 1948, in Hoffnungstahl Church near Artas, S.D. They made their home on the Mettler family homestead in a sod house for a short time. They were general farmers raising small grains and livestock. In the fall of 1969, they moved into Eureka. Helen had worked for three years at the Borscht Kettle and three years at the Luncheonette. In 1977, she started doing home health care for the state of South Dakota and continued until the mid-1980s. After retirement, she enjoyed making homemade noodles with her daughters and quilting with neighbors. Helen enjoyed polka music, word find games and playing cards. Time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always very special moments in her life. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Survivors include her husband of Eureka; two daughters, Pam (Keith) Zimmerman of Eureka and Ruby Beck of Artas; one brother, Alvin (Esther) Ottenbacher of Aberdeen; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her parents preceded her in death. Honorary casketbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers will be Steve Ottenbacher, Gary Ottenbacher, James Ottenbacher, Elmer Ottenbacher, Clyde Ottenbacher and Dan Mettler. The family prefers memorials be made to American Diabetes Association, 4305 S. Louise Ave., Suite 205, Sioux Falls, SD 57106. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
