DIENES, GEORGE L., 80, died Tuesday on October 18, 2011 at his home in Conway, SC, following a two-year battle with lung cancer.
He was born March 26, 1931 in Louisville to the late George John and Virginia Wessel Dienes. He graduated from Saint Xavier High School in 1948, and received a Bachelor's Degree in chemical engineering and master's degree in engineering (with high honors) from the J.B. Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville in 1953. He served three years as the gunnery officer for the U.S.S. Massey (DD-778) and resigned honorably in 1956 with the rank of lieutenant (JG). Following his Navy service, he received a Master's of Business Administration in 1958 from the Harvard Business School, where he specialized in marketing and finance.
From 1958-1972 he served in sales, marketing, and management positions at a variety of engineering and technology companies in the Boston and New York areas, including DuPont, Perma Research and Development, Abcor, North American Philips, and General Signal. From 1972-1985 he was the vice president of Sales and Marketing at O-Z/Gedney Company, where he was awarded the Manufacturer of the Year Award by the National Electrical Manufacturers Representatives Association (NEMRA) in 1980 and later founded the NEMRA Manufacturers' Group in 1983. He was also an active member of the Board of Directors of the Big Brothers Association of Boston. In 1985 he moved to Chicago, IL as the vice president of Corporate Development for Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. From 1985-2005 he acquired over 40 telephone and wireless carriers and saw subscriber growth from 200,000 in 1985 to 6,000,000 in 2005.
George is survived by his wife, June Dienes; his three sons, Donald Neil Meyer, Jeffrey Stuart Meyer, and Klee Dienes; his two sisters Ruth and Mary; his Big Brothers Association "little brother," James Carroll; eight grandchildren; and other loving family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray, Art, and Ed.
