Helen Avis Braun was born May 27, 1915 in Rush City, MN. Survived by nieces, Muriel Anderson, St. Paul, MN and Sharon Machacek of Cedar Rapids, IA. Preceeded in death by husband, John Braun, parents, Joseph and May Garthofner, sisters, Lura Nelson, Edna Wilson and Muriel Garthofner, brother Joseph Garthofner . She attended Rush City Schools and graduated in 1933. Helen moved to Minneapolis after graduation where she met John Braun and was married in St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Minneapolis, MN on October 1, 1938. . John applied for an electrician job in Hawaii for the Dept. of Interior in Washington, DC. After being hired John left for Hawaii in February. Helen left by boat a week later. While in Hawaii Pearl Harbor was bombed. Helen, wanting to help, answered a plea for anyone that could help to go downtown to a hotel where they would be assigned a job. Asked if Helen could drive a truck, she said, “yes”, thinking it was a pickup truck. It was a cargo truck covered with a large canvas. Driving to the address she was given, over curbs and debris in the streets, she arrived at the address only to find out it was a local mortuary. She was driving a load of dead bodies. Helen made several trips that night. During the black outs in the evenings she and John would sit in a closet with the light on listening to the radio. Helen stood for hours in line the next day to send word home that both she and John survived the attack. She was allowed one telegram of two words only. She sent word home to her mother saying, “Both safe”. They left Hawaii in 1946 and returned to the United States. After visiting Minnesota where both their families lived, they settled in Long Beach, California.
In 1948 Helen and John moved to Pine City, MN and opened an appliance store called Braun's Equipment. After two years they moved to Oregon where John worked for Bonneville Power. Helen worked for Meyer and Franks Department Store in the office. John was assigned to out of town work, so he and Helen packed up their things in the car and Helen went with him to his jobs in Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Washington and Northern California, living in motels. In 1956 John was told he would be working in Vancouver, Washington for a long time where they bought a house and Helen has lived until recently.
Helen joined the Sweet Adelines in 1961, and sang bass in the the City of Roses chorus and later the Columbia River chorus. Helen sewed several of the costumes for both her chorus and John's chorus, and was in charge of the choreography for the Sweet Adeline's. Helen was nominated Sweet Adeline of the year in 1976-1977.
Helen and John did much traveling from 1963 until John's health wouldn't allow it. They traveled to Jerusalem, Greece, Europe, London, Puerto Rico. After John's death Helen continued traveling and became a world traveler. The only places she didn't visit was Inner and Outer Mongolia, New Guinea, Upper Thailand and 4 or 5 Islands of the Philippines. She traveled until 1992.
Helen lived in her house until she was 94 at which time was not able to take care of herself nor her home. She then moved to Lake Shore Home Care in Vancouver and lived until her death. A Funeral Mass will be held for Helen 11:00 A.M., Thursday, May 19th at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Vancouver, WA. Interment will follow immediately at Mother Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
