INDIANAPOLIS STAR - Ford Inspector Earns $6,000. , Auto For Ideas - Shelbyville , Indiana - Emerson F. Winkler's ideas have always been paying off, but his last one netted him $6,000 and a new car.
Winkler, an employee of the Ford Motor Co. on Indianapolis' east side, received the awards for his suggestion to replace a hydraulic cylinder, used to position parts on a grinding machine, with a heavy spring. The spring assures more positive placement of parts for grinding and reduces scrappage.
A floor inspector in the steering gear and cold heading plane, Winkler said he plans to use the $6,000 "to pay off a few debts and put the rest on his new Shelbyville home." The couple moved from Waldron two months ago.
The 54-year-old Winkler has won 16 cash awards totaling $8,988 out of 83 suggestions he has made while being employed at the company the last nine years.
"He's good at fixing things at home, too", said Mrs. Winkler. She added that their 16-year old daughter, Linda, a junior at Waldron High School will probably get a lot of use out of the new car. She is about to get her driver's license.
SHELBYVILLE NEWS - Emerson Winkler Does It Again - When Emerson Winkler, 205 Conrey St., a 10-year employee of Ford Motor Co. in Indianapolis, received a new car and handsome check last year for submitting the top suggestion at the plant, little did he expect to be repeating the honor.
But Winkler, a floor inspector in Ford's quality control department, recently was named winner again in the plant's Employee Suggestion and Management Proposal Plan competition. This time he'll get a 1967 Mercury Monterey and $6,000 in cash.
Winkler's winning suggestion was aimed at reducing scrappage in the plant's power steering piston.
Winkler now is the all-time leader in the Indianapolis Ford suggestion program since it was started in 1960, having collected $21,047 including the two car awards.
The Shelbyville man has submitted 87 suggestions since the program started and 18 of them have earned him cash awards.
