Louis Gruntz served in WWII as a Cpl. in B Company and HQ Company of the 712th Tank Battalion. He was a gunner in a M4 Sherman Tank and participated in 5 major campaigns in the European Theater of Operations: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, landing on Utah Beach on June 28, 1944 as part of the 1st Army under Gen. Omar Bradley and attached to 90th Infantry Division, 3rd Army under command of Gen. George Patton, Jr. through France, Luxembourg, Germany and Czechoslovakia.
