GURTNER, CLEMENT F.

Clement F. Gurtner, a retired employee of Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, died Thursday at a friend's home in Dallas. He was 80. Mr. Gurtner was born in New Orleans and lived in Chalmette for the past 54 years. He was a former member of Paul M. Schneidau Lodge No. 391 F & AM, and a former member of the Jerusalem Temple Shrine Clown Unit. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, stationed on the USS FOGG DE-57. He was a member of the Senior Friends Club, Association of Senior Citizens, Chalmette Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3106, and AARP De Le Ronde Chapter 4656, and a charter member of the National D-Day Museum. Survivors include his companion, Mary Benfatti; a son, Tom Gurtner; two daughters, Peggy Wooton and Jo Ann Tierney; a sister, Norris Hattier; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 West Virtue St., Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
