SHAFFER - Richard A., "Dick," 67, Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Windber, went to heaven Feb. 6, 2005, at V.A. Medical Center, Durham N.C. Born Dec. 30, 1937, in Windber, son of Myron and Betty (Ringler) Shaffer of Windber, who will always remember him as a devoted son. Husband of Suzanne, who is the daughter of William and Sara Gillespie. Children, Mark, married to the former Bonnie Klochak, New Milford, Conn.; Bret, married to the former Kim Csordas, Windber; Krista and close friend Ed Fleet, Raleigh, N.C.; and Todd, married to the former Cathy Wisecup, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. Grandchildren Melisa, Jay, Allison, Kara, Karson, Skylar, and special grandson, Luke. Brother of Dennis, married to the former Elaine Gaydos, and Jay, married to the former Patti Novak, all of Windber. Also numerous nieces and nephews. Dick and Suzi were high school sweethearts. There is no doubt Dick enjoyed life to its fullest and meant the world to his friends. He had a magnetic personality with a strong work ethic and positive outlook on life. Dick served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959. During the 1980s he was actively involved with the Conemaugh Detachment of the Marine Corps League, where he served as commandant. In 1983 he led the rifle team to a Pa. state championship as top shooter. He was also a member of TPA for 28 years. Member of the D.A.V. and lifetime NRA member. Dick was a lovable grandfather and his grandchildren refered to him as "Papa Dick" and will remain a guiding angel in their lives forever. Dick worked for his father in the coal industry and was a lineman for several power companies, and enjoyed his own businesses. Shaffer Asphalt was a prominent paving company in Windber from 1970 to 1975. Many friends will remember the fun times at "Freddies Inn" that Dick and Suzi owned and operated from 1976 to 1989. After a short adventure in Cancun, Mexico, they moved to Maryland and owned and operated "Bowleys Marine Parts" for 10 years. After going on disability in 1999, they retired to Raleigh, N.C., to be with family. Dick was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, where service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, the Rev. Gary Grau, pastor, officiating. Interment Berkey Cemetery. Military graveside service by Conemaugh Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Friends received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Meek Funeral Home Inc., Windber. Memorials may be directed to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, 90 Lulay St., Johnstown, Pa. 15904, in honor of his grandson, Luke.
