Leonard J. Leingang, 72, Mandan, went to his final peace after a long struggle with his illness, March 3, 2008, surrounded by his loving family at Medcenter One Hospital, Bismarck. Leonard was born Nov. 12, 1935, in Solen, the son of Joe G. and Regina (Lauinger) Leingang. He was raised and educated in St. Anthony, where he was united in marriage with Julie Wetsch Oct. 2, 1957. Leonard would be described as a very gentle gentleman. As a little boy his favorite toy was a hammer, which ultimately led to his career choice as a contractor. He was the owner/operator of Leingang Construction. Leonard always enjoyed nature and all that it had to offer, especially hunting with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed his friends, his fishing buddies in particular. Together they started Fish-N-Friends, where they organized tournaments; Leonard had the job of making his special chili. Family was always central in his life. He especially enjoyed family gatherings and camping. After retirement he and Julie did some traveling with friends. He loved playing cards. Being a competitive gin player, when he would lose, he would throw away the deck. He was a proud volunteer for Mandan Fire Department, where he served as captain. He was also a member of Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, where he also served on the degree staff. He enjoyed socializing as a member of the Eagles and Elks.
Left with many fond memories and an example of a life well lived, is his wife of 50 years, Julie, Mandan. Leonard lives on in his children, one daughter, Tammy Leingang (special friend, Tim Albrecht); four sons, Jody (Laurie), Dean (Natalie), Greg (Wendy) and Todd (Shelly), all of Mandan; eight grandchildren, John "J.B.," Shawna and Shane, Ashley and Jamie, Amanda and Ross and Alexandra; four sisters, Irene (Dan) Eckroth, Rose (Don) Sturn, Darlene (Hilbert) Hohbein and Bernadette (Mike) Schaff, all of Mandan; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Beehler, Mandan, and Bernice Leingang, Mesa, Ariz.; and two brothers-in-law, Jim (JoAnn) Wetsch, Mandan, and Jerry (Nancy) Wetsch, Beaver Dam, Wis.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Sarah Leingang; and two brothers, Bernard and Larry.
