LANCASTER, Wis. -- William R. "Bill" Thier Jr., 78, of Lancaster, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Martin Funeral Home, Lancaster, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster.
He was born on Aug. 30, 1929, in Lancaster, son of William R. and Roxanne (Jentz) Thier Sr. His father ran Thier's Pool Hall and Bill was a helper there until he graduated from high school in 1947. After high school, he worked with his father painting and doing carpentry work.
He married Jean Vesperman on Oct. 15, 1949, at St. Luke's Methodist Church in Dubuque.
Bill spent three years farming, worked for Farley Letcher in Dubuque for two years, and worked for Eastman Cartwright for two years. He started working at John Deere Dubuque Works in 1965 and retired in February 1992.
During retirement, Bill and Jean spent winters in Florida for 10 years. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and snowmobiling.
Bill was a past member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and a present member of the BPOE Elks Lodge 1460 in Platteville.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Thier, of Lancaster; his sister-in-law, Doris Ann Vesperman, of Lancaster; six nephews; a niece; and an aunt, Ruth Bennett, of Fennimore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marilyn Laughton; and his brother-in-law, Gerald "Jake" Vesperman.
In lieu of plants and flowers, a William R. Thier, Jr. memorial fund has been established.
