Engel Maria Margarethe Barkau Schütz Birth: Jan. 4, 1852, Germany Death: May 31, 1920 Venedy Washington County Illinois, USA Engel Maria Margarethe Barkau was born in Drohne, a small village in Germany, on January 4, 1852 to Heinrich F. W. Barkau and Henriette W. C. Engelage. She was baptized in the church of Dielingen on January 11th. She came to the United States with her parents and siblings in 1859 and settled in Okawville, Washington County, Illinois. In America, she became a faithful member of St. Paul's, just south of Okawville, and was confirmed on April 23, 1865. Engel was united in marriage to Peter Schütz at St. Paul's United Church of Christ on April 24, 1873. Peter and Engel were the loving parents of six sons and four daughters. They moved to Venedy and then Plum Hill in the middle and late 1870's before returning to Okawville around 1880. Engel's mother died later that decade in 1888. Peter and Engel remained in Okawville until the 1890's when they moved to Venedy once more. In 1897, her father died and she inherited a substantial amount of money. Peter retired in 1910 and with Engel, rested at their newly-built home in Venedy. Christ Schuetz, their third son, and his wife and daughter moved in during the April of 1909 due to illness and died late the next year in 1910. Viola Schuetz, Christ's daughter, was left in the care of her grandparents where she was raised. Engel's husband died in 1913, shortly before their youngest son's wedding. Unable to support herself, she gave up residence of her home to her son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Emelie Schuetz.. On May 21, 1914, she moved to St. Louis and lived with one of her children where she was visited often by family. Engel was a loving mother and grandmother and was known as ?Angeline' and later as ?Lena'. She had beautiful brown eyes which passed to many of her descendants. Engel later moved back to Venedy and lived by herself. Similar to her husband, Engel was very religious. She was a loyal reader of the Peace Messenger and had been a member of the Women's Association of St. Paul's since the year of its foundation. Engel Schütz died at the age of sixty-eight on May 31, 1920 in Venedy. Her funeral, attended by dozens of her extensive family, was at St. Paul's on June 3rd. She was laid to rest in the cemetery there, one row away from her husband Peter.
