McCracken-Dean Funeral Home, Pana, IL Online Obituary
Edith I. Budds, 104 years of age and lifelong resident of Pana, IL passed away Friday, June 1, 2007 at 12:10 a.m. at Heritage Manor Nursing Home of Pana.
Edith was born August 29, 1902 to parents, Mark and Permelia Eberlein Budds. She attended Field School and Washington School. Her first grade teacher was Crystal Butcher. Even though she did not have a high school education, due to illness of her mother and her need to care for her, she held several jobs in the community and was very musically talented.
Edith's first job was at the "Dime" store where she worked for 12 years. She then was employed at the Montgomery Ward store for several years, and while working there, she learned of a job opening at the Central Illinois Public Service Company. She had always wanted to work for CIPS and applied and was hired by Mr. Bob Rollo "on her previous work experiences"; and after having no trouble learning the job, she was Head Cashier for 21 years.
Upon her mandatory retirement from CIPS (Edith said that women were required to retire at age 62, men at age 65), she then worked for Amway Dealers, Opal and Willard Brown as a bookkeeper, then went to work at Pana Area Credit Union, 210 S. Hickory St.; working for Herb Goettig and Chester Morton.
From 1975 to 1985, Edith was the faithful companion and caretaker of Mrs. Nita Anderson, widow of Rev. R.J. Anderson.
Edith was known for her love of music and her musical abilities. She played the violin, ukulele, Hawaiian guitar, piano, and organ. She played in the Zahradka orchestra, Miss Cutler's orchestra, and the First Baptist Church orchestra. She composed music and also taught piano and organ.
Edith came to a saving knowledge of her Lord Jesus Christ at the age of 14. She became a member of the First Baptist Church in 1924, and was in the last group to be baptized in the old original church; a frame structure that stood at 213 S. Locust St. She taught a boy's Sunday School class and was so well liked by them that they insisted that she be promoted, along with them for several years. She also taught a girl's class who enjoyed her teaching as well as her entertainment. Once a month, she would pick them up in her car and take them for parties and recreation, and then deliver them all home again. She continued as a "chauffer" to many who needed transportation to doctor's appointments and various places until her eye site failed and she was forced to give up driving.
Edith served as pianist of First Baptist Church beginning in 1923, then as organist and choir director. Edith is survived by a great niece, Joann (Ken) Jenkins, Farmington Hills, Michigan; two cousins, Wilma Tokoly and Marjorie Lorton of Pana; and Don Anderson, close friend from San Antonio, Texas, son of the late Rev. and Mrs. R.J. Anderson. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. in First Baptist Church, Pana with Pastor Larry Gruis and Pastor John Hippard officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 12:00-1:00p.m. in the First Baptist Church, Pana. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Pana.
