BATESVILLE ? Joan M. Wissel, 80, Batesville, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at Margaret Mary Community Hospital.
Born Jan. 2, 1931, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of Luetta (Schwartz) and August Meyer. She married Carl Wissel May 21, 1955, at Little Flower Church, Cincinnati, and he preceded her in death Jan. 15, 2011.
She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Oldenburg, the Daughters of Isabella and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.
Joan was proud to serve as a registered nurse for 40 years. She attended St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing, Covington, Ky., and after earning her degree worked at Drake Hospital, Cincinnati. Later she worked as a private duty nurse for 10 years before taking a position at Margaret Mary Community Hospital, retiring in 1993 after 25 years.
Those who knew Joan, which was pretty much everyone since she was a people person, will remember her vibrant personality and sense of humor. She often told jokes and wasn't afraid to point that sense of humor at herself. Her hobbies included crocheting, keeping up with her favorite programs, "Ellen" and "NCIS," as well as being an avid reader. Joan's greatest joy was having her family around.
She is survived by her daughters Mary Jo Nobbe, Batesville, Roseann Cook, Indianapolis, and Amy Strub, Batesville; sons Carl "Chuck," Yorkville, Dan, Austin, Texas, and Edward "Ned," Indianapolis; sisters Henrietta "Hank" Zint and Audrey Middendorf, Cincinnati; brothers Robert, Cincinnati, Howard "Red," Mason, Ohio, and Edward "Butch," Cincinnati; 12 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and her sister Anna Mae Fulton.
Visitation is Friday, Nov. 25, from 4-8 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home. The Rev. John Geis, OFM, will officiate the 10 a.m. funeral Saturday, Nov. 26, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial is in St. Louis Cemetery.
