Irene Rose Imig was born October 2, 1919, to Albert and Mabel (Gullickson) Guthmiller in Yankton County. She grew up on the family farm in Menno, South Dakota and later attended Freeman Junior College. She worked at the Star Hotel in Menno, where she met her lifelong love and future husband, Myron "Mike" Imig. She married Mike on April 30, 1939, in Menno, South Dakota. Irene and Mike proudly celebrated their 50th Anniversary in Yankton in 1989 and were married 54 years. After their marriage they moved to Louisville, Kentucky, while Mike served during World War II. After the war, they moved back to Yankton where Mike started Mike's Music in Yankton. Irene devoted her life to her family, raising five daughters. Actively involved in their lives, she was always available for sage advice and quiet wisdom. She encouraged each of them to be unique, independent individuals.
Irene was very proud of her membership in the Salem Lutheran Church of Freeman, where she was baptized and confirmed. She was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton, where she was very active, including singing in the Ladies Choir. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 65 years, a member of the VFW Auxiliary, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years and also a member of various bridge groups in Yankton. Irene loved playing bridge and the companionship of her bridge partners. Irene was an avid golfer, bowler and was a remarkable cook. She loved baseball and loved to travel, including trips to several World Series, but her most memorable trip was to Jerusalem in 1993. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by family. She loved her family and was treasured by her grandchildren and great grandchildren and delighted in their accomplishments.
The last few years Irene lived in her apartment on the golf course. She loved watching the golfers go by and during the holidays treasured her Christmas display. Her days were joyful and filled with visits, phone calls, baseball games, and political commentary. She looked forward to her weekly visit from her senior companion, Betty and their competitive fun with Let's Make A Deal. Irene was very proud of being Dr. Neumayr's patient for many years and appreciated his making her feel special.
She will be greatly missed by her 5 daughters: Dona Knapp of Yankton; Michelle "Mickey" Tapken of Washington D.C.; Mary Dell (Michael) Cody of Yankton; Patti Pujol of New Orleans, Louisiana; and Mitzi Fiedler of Key West, Florida; 9 grandchildren: Ellie (Bill) Snell, Tim (Tricia) Cody, Kato (Mary Gen) Buss, Chris (Kelly) Tapken, Nick Cody, Josh (Sandra) Buss, Whitney Buss, Andy (Kathryn) Cody, and Natalie Tapken; 8 great grandchildren: Carissa, Kai, Will, Jonathan, Teddy, Tate, Olivia, and Simon; 2 brothers: Mervin (Betty) Guthmiller of Menno, South Dakota and Emmett Guthmiller of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and 2 sisters: Lorraine (Elmer) Baltzer of Scotland and Marjorie Sorensen of Brookings, South Dakota. She will also be missed by many special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 sons-in-law: Eddie Pujol, Phil Knapp, and Terry Fiedler; and also by 1 brother: Luvern Guthmiller.
The family would like to thank all of Irene's special caregivers: Sandy, Ashley, Lauren, Melodee, Barb, Rachel, Julie, Mary, and Diane, who allowed Irene the opportunity to stay in her home until her death. Irene was very proud when she attained the age of 90. Each year, as her birthday approached she looked forward to celebrating. Most recently she was often heard saying with pride, "You know I am 92!" Now, on October 2nd, her 93rd birthday, we will celebrate a life truly devoted to others, as she celebrates with our dad. Mom, we adore you and you will always be in our hearts.
