Emmett Wallace Guthmiller
April 21, 1924 - July 1, 2015
Emmett W. Guthmiller, 91, died on July 1, 2015 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm on July 7, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls with Pastor Rolf Svanoe officiating. Burial will be at Hills of Rest Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held at Miller Funeral Home West on July 6, 2015 with the family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and Masonic Funeral Rites at 7:00 p.m.
Emmett was born on April 21, 1924, the son of Albert and Mabel Guthmiller. He was born and raised in the Menno, SD area. As a World War II veteran, he was very proud of his military service. He was privileged to travel to Washington, DC on the first South Dakota Honor Flight and shared many memories of that trip with family and friends.
On July 14, 1945, he married Marguerite Horst in Little Rock, Arkansas. They began raising their family on a farm in the Menno area until later moving to Sioux Falls. Emmett retired after 30 years of service with the South Dakota Livestock Sanitary Board and enjoyed many years of retirement. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, a Master Mason in Trinity Lodge #200 and a Shriner. He loved Twins baseball, camping and fishing and spent a number of years wintering in the Brownsville, TX area. He also enjoyed exercising and the many friends he met on his daily trips to the Sanford Wellness Center having been an active member since 1992.
Grateful for having shared his life are his four daughters Marietta (Merlyn) Brandt, Connie (Jim) Dam, Elaine (Russ Nielsen) Grandgenett, Jeanette (Tom) Torgerson all of the Sioux Falls area, along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, a brother Mervin (Betty) Guthmiller of Menno, SD, sisters Lorraine Baltzer of Scotland, SD and Marge Sorenson of Brookings, SD, a special friend Deloris McDonald of Sioux Falls and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite, parents, daughter Sandra Wellnitz, sister Irene Imig of Yankton, SD and brother Laverne Guthmiller of Austin, TX.
