MOSCOW Katherine Rose Helbling, a longtime Spokane area nurse, died at Good Samaritan Nursing Center here Friday evening from causes related to age. She was 90.
She moved to Moscow in December 1989.
She was born April 23, 1899, at Mandan, N.D., to Rochus and Dorothea Knoll Helbling. Shegrew up and attended schools in North Dakota.
She worked for almost 60 years as a private duty nurse. She received her nurse's training and nursing certificate in 1921 from the St. Alexis Hospital in North Dakota. She worked for a doctor at Bismark, N.D., from 1921 to 1933.
From 1933 to 1941 she owned and operated a children's clothing store at Bismark.
She moved to Spokane in 1941, where she continued as a private nurse, and also worked for Sacred Heart Hospital for many years.
She retired in 1985. She never married and she dedicated her life to the care of family and other people.
She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Spokane.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Art, Ray, James and Bill Helbling, all of Moscow.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Moscow and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's with the Rev. Dennis Wassmuth as celebrant. Burial will be at the Moscow Catholic Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the St. Mary's School Foundation, 412 N. Monroe, Moscow, Idaho 83843.
