Gary Dean Helbling, 56, Mandan, died peacefully at home on April 18, 2006 after a battle with cancer. Burial will be in the Mandan Union Cemetery. Gary was born on April 6, 1950 in Mandan, ND, the son of Ralph and Della (Stastny) Helbling. After graduating from Mandan Senior High in 1968, he attended the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, where he graduated as an Industrial Engineer in 1973. He worked for Rausch Manufacturing, St. Paul, MN from 1973-1976. The focus of his career expanded to Environmental Engineering at the North Dakota State Health Department, Air Quality Division, for thirty years. He received national and regional awards for his work in the area of Air Toxicity. Gary married Laura Hopfauf at Christ the King Church in 1971. Together they had three children which were their greatest achievements, as well as the special love for two grandchildren. Gary will be remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues as a man of integrity, hard work, and kindness. He was an avid tennis player, earning first place championships for several years in the Bismarck-Mandan Tennis Association. His interests also included attending every sporting and school activity of his children, the early Saturday morning coffee meetings at Cappuccino on Collins with Dan Ulmer and the gang, and working on his beloved red rusted out Datsun truck. Gary is survived by his wife, Laura Helbling, Mandan, ND, a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Brandon and Julie Helbling, and two grandchildren, Breanna and Brady Helbling, Kalamazoo, Michigan, a daughter & son-in-law, Lacey and Jeff Paul, Gilbert, Arizona, a son, Montague Helbling, Mandan, and one sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Tony Brucker, Mandan, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother.
