William Robert Layman Sr.
William Robert Layman Sr., 85, of Montana Mines Community, passed away Friday (July 24, 2009) in his home.He was born Sept. 19, 1923, in River Seam, Monongalia County, a son of the late Frederick O. and Chrissie O'Dell Layman. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Wilma Miller Layman.Mr. Layman was a lifelong member of the Montana Mines United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict in Japan and Korea.He worked for more than 40 years with the Champion Stores and served with them until their closing as a division manager. He then worked for more than five years and retired with the Marion County Board of Education.Bill served for more than 30 years as the Sunday School superintendent of the Montana Mines United Methodist Church. He also was a longtime member of the Montana Improvement Association. Bill loved to garden and enjoyed participating in the Fairmont area farmers market.Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Wilma Miller Layman of Montana Mines Community; son, William "Bill" and his wife Deborah Layman of Bunner Ridge Community; daughter, Patricia and her husband Raymond Knight of Boothsville Community; grandchildren, Steve Knight of Fairmont, Rachel Knight of Boothsville, Andrew Knight of Boothsville, Amanda and her husband Roger Channel of Morgan Ridge, Christopher Layman of Bunner Ridge and Jarrod Layman of Bunner Ridge; great-grandchildren, Tristin Channel, Mark Knight, Kristen Knight, Cassidy Knight and Hunter Knight; brother, Frederick Layman of Opekiska Community; sisters, Etta Mae and her husband the Rev. Arney Sypolt of Lexington Ky., Betty Jane and her husband Nelson Borden of Kansas City, Mo., and Nancy Morris of Torrence, Calif.He also is survived by several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Douglas Morris; and sister-in-law, Betty Layman.The family would like to thank TLC Hospice and Dr. Eugene Menez for their love and care of Bill during the past month.Memorial donations may be made to Montana Mines United Methodist Church.Friends and family may call the Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today. The funeral will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Danny Blake and Lonnie Fast officiating. Interment will follow at the Montana Mines Cemetery, Montana Mines Community.
