Obituary
Francis Xavier Wegmann DDS, a New Orleans dentist for more than 50 years, passed away on September 24, 2015 at the age of 95 surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Joyce Marie Caire Wegmann and the cherished father of Catherine Wegmann Domangue (Lee), Elizabeth Sophia Wegmann, Dr. Mark John Wegmann (Caroline), the late Joyce "D'ree" Wegmann Syll, and the late Francis "Twig" Wegmann Jr. He was affectionately known as "Opa" to his grandchildren, Brant Domangue (Amy), Beau Domangue, Morgan Domangue, Martine Domangue, George Syll Jr, (Amber), Stephanie Syll, Elizabeth Cameron Sweeting, John "Jack" Wegmann, William Wegmann, great grandson Ayden Syll, and caregiver Josh Batchelor.
Born January 20, 1920 the son of John X. Wegmann and Sophie Bonhage Wegmann, he grew up in a large catholic family with 10 brothers. He was predeceased by his brothers George J., August A., John X. Jr., Charles H., Fr. Anthony J., Joseph A., Leo F., Msgr. Raymond A., Edward F., and William J. Wegmann. He married, raised his family, and lived his entire life in the city he knew and loved. He was a graduate of Jesuit High School, Loyola University, and Loyola school of Dentistry. During World War II he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Belle Chasse, Louisiana and later Germany where he attended the Nuremberg trials. In addition to his private dental practice, he was on staff at Touro Hospital from 1948 till his retirement.
A gentleman and New Orleanian to the core, he loved to be surrounded by family and friends. He followed the Saints and LSU passionately, loved New Orleans cuisine, golf, travel, and poker. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Memorial Mass at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 10:00AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the memory of Francis X. Wegmann at Jesuit High School, Loyola University, or Notre Dame Hospice. The family appreciates the special care and generosity of Drs. Monty Glorioso and Luis Arencibia, as well the attentive care he received at East Jefferson General Hospital and Chateau De Notre Dame.
