John N. Deakin Jr.
DEAKIN, John Nelson, Jr., 85, of Wheeling, W.Va., died Friday, February 17, 2006 in the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Wheeling.
He was born August 9, 1920 in Wheeling, the son of the late John Nelson, Sr. and Louise Kaiser Deakin.
Mr. Deakin retired with 48 years of service with McGee Office Plus in Wheeling; he served in the US Army infantry 95th division during World War II and was in the European Theater of Operation; he served as an Elder and Clerk of Session in the Presbyterian Church and was active in the Upper Valley Presbytery; and was a member of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, Wheeling.
Mr. Deakin was a member of Ohio Lodge No. 1 A.F.&A.M.; a Past Master of the former Nelson Lodge No. 30; Past High Priest of Wheeling Union Chapter No. 1 RAM; a Past Commander of Wheeling Commandery No. 1 Knights Templar; and past Grand Commander of W.Va. York Rite Sovereign College; and Past Governor of Fort Henry College No. 61; and Holder of the Purple Cross. He was a member of the Allied Masonic Degrees; a member of the Knight Masons; past Excellent Chief Holy Royal Order of Knight Templar Priests; Knight York Cross of Honor; Red Cross of Constantine; a member of the Scottish Rite 33 Degree Mason; a member of the Osiris Temple of the Shrine; Legion of Honor; a member of El Tor Grotto; and member of the Wheeling Elks Lodge No. 28.
Surviving are his wife, Estella Virginia Eckard Deakin; a daughter, Arlene L. Helms and her husband, Donald, of Dandridge, Tenn.; and a grandchild, Charles Nelson Helms of Dandridge.
Friends will be received at the Kepner Funeral Home, National Road at Bethany Pike, Wheeling Sunday, February 19, 2006 from 11-3 and 6-8 p.m. and Monday, February 20, 2006 from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Dr. George B. Kurtz, III officiating.
Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, where Masonic Graveside service will be held with the Ohio Lodge No. 1 A.F.&A.M.
