August Heyne, 96, Bismarck, died April 13, 2010. Services will be held 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 19, at Our Savior?s Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Carl Lindemann officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
August was born Nov. 8, 1913, on a farm south of Heil, the son of George and Elizabeth (Zimmerle) Heyne. He was raised and educated in rural Heil. August entered the U.S. Army in 1941 and served in WWII, receiving a Purple Heart for his injuries and was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Mildred Sebastian on May 16, 1945, in Wibaux, Mont. August worked as a rural mail carrier at Heil for 30 years. August and Mildred moved to Bismarck in 1990.
After retirement, he enjoyed carpentry and making things for his family and friends. He loved music, playing the mouth organ and accordion and singing in the church choir. He also collected coins, played horseshoe, collected pens and pencils, studied the stock market, was a fan of the Minnesota Twins and participated in the Germans from Russia Oral History Program and the North Dakota Veteran?s History Project. August loved the game of baseball. At age 13, he was invited to play on the Heil town baseball team, and after the war he managed the Heil Baseball team and later the Elgin American Junior Legion Baseball Team.
August was a member of the Elgin American Legion for over 65 years, DAV/VFW, Bismarck AMVETS, Carson Horseshoe Club, National Rural Letter Carrier Assoc., Church Financial Secretary at Zion Lutheran Church in Elgin and a past American Legion Commander in Elgin.
August is survived by his wife, Mildred, Bismarck; his children, Patricia (Dale) Monson, St. Cloud, Minn., Jack Heyne, Carson, and Jo?an (Harold) Huber, Ponte Vedra, Fla.; his grandchildren, Alyssa Demers, Aren Monson, David Huber, Elizabeth Sims, Justin Heyne, Corby Heyne, Chris Heyne, Joe Heyne and Cliff Heyne; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Loretta Kamrath, Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Arthur, Emil and Edwin Heyne.
