Obituary:
Austin G. Joerger, Sr., 87, of Bonney Hill Rd., Hamilton, NY, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Community Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, Hamilton.
He was born March 14, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY, a son of August and Catherine Amrell Joerger. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943, serving in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe during WWII until his discharge in 1945. On February 15, 1947, Austin married Frances Schaefer in Richmond Hill, Long Island. Mr. Joerger began his career with an engineering firm working on designs for oil refineries and power plants, as well as for Chicago OHare and John F. Kennedy International Airports. Following that, he was the Chief Engineer at New York Medical College. Moving to Hamilton in 1965, Mr. Joerger was the Director of Physical Plant at Colgate University. During his tenure, he directed the construction and renovation of 85 percent of Colgates building area. In addition, he developed a regular repair and maintenance program that covered all the campus buildings. When he retired in 1987 after nearly 23 years with the department, he left a campus in first-class condition.
A resolution of appreciation passed December 31, 1987 by the colleges Board of Trustees reads in part: Mr. Joerger provided important leadership to the Physical Plant Department which enabled Colgate University to enjoy buildings and grounds that rank among the finest of any college or university.
Mr. Joerger served as President of the Eastern Region Association of Physical Plant Administrators and had been a member of its Board of Directors. He was one of the founders of the College and University Facilities Management Association in New York, an organization that conducts workshops and seminars for all physical plant personnel, from directors to online work force in New York State colleges. He had consulted as a number of colleges and universities including LeMoyne, Mount St. Mary, Hartwick and the University of Maine.
He was a communicant of St. Marys Church in Hamilton.
Surviving are his wife, Frances; his children, Christopher and Elizabeth Joerger of Hamilton; Victoria and Gregory Hess of Eaton; Peter Joerger of Logan, UT; Paul and Lynda Joerger of Flagstaff, AZ; Marianne and Michael Dunham of West Chester, OH; daughter-in-law, Terry Joerger of Hamilton; a sister, Cathleen Corry of Poughkeepsie; fourteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Austin C. Joerger in 2006, and a brother, Allan Joerger.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at St. Marys Church, 16 Wylie St., Hamilton, NY.
Interment in the Colgate Cemetery will be in the spring.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.
Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Marys Church.
