DUBUQUE - Rev. Msgr. Arthur A. Halbach, 97, of 3485 Windsor Ave., a retired priest in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, died Thursday (July 15, 1999) at Stonehill Care Center.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Raphael Cathedral, with Archbishop Jerome Hanus O.S.B. officiating. Burial will be in the Resurrection Garden Mausoleum, Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. today at St. Raphael Cathedral, where a rosary will be held at 4 p.m. and a wake service at 7 p.m. Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Arthur A. Halbach was born Sept. 8, 1901, in Stacyville, the son of Peter and Mary (Brumm) Halbach. He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque and received his theological training at the Sulpician Seminary at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He was ordained May 21, 1932, by Archbishop Francis J. L. Beckman. His first assignment was as associate pastor at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Dyersville, 1932-38. He taught at the former Columbia Academy from 1938 to 1941. In 1941, he began graduate studies at Fordham University in New York and the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Upon completion of his doctorate, he taught at Loras College, 1946-50.
He served as head of the archdiocesan school system from 1950 to 1953. He returned to Loras College for one year, 1953-54. He served as pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Webster City, 1954-66, and St. John Parish in Delhi from 1966 until his retirement in 1976.
In 1965, he was appointed dean of the Eagle Grove Deanery. He was named a Monsignor in 1952. He served as Clarke College chaplain in 1947; director of cemeteries, 1950-53; spiritual director of the A.C.C.W., 1950-53. He also served as archdiocesan director of the Apostleship of Prayer and director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, both until 1953.
Survivors include a brother, John (Rose) Halbach of Cedar Falls; and a sister, Agnes Buch of Elgin, Ill.
