Born in Newton to Clare Hamill Brehme and George A. Brehme, he lived in Sergeantsville for the past 19 years.
Since 1993 he was an assistant professor in the reading department at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft and a member of its faculty association. Earlier he was an investigator for the Securities Exchange Commission in their New York regional office of enforcement.

Mr. Brehme was a member of the Stockton Presbyterian Church, where he served as an ordained deacon.
A Bob Dylan fan, he loved reading and teaching and gardening, and raised a variety of hot peppers to use in cooking and grilling. He was a Civil War buff and wanted to serve as a guide at the Gettysburg Battle Site National Park after retiring. He particularly loved attending his daughter Ellie's music and sports events.
His mother died previously.
