Herman J. Steckler
Herman J. Steckler, 90, of Mt. Carmel, passed away on June 15, 2011 at Wabash General Hospital, Mt. Carmel.
He was born on January 4, 1921 west of Mt. Carmel, the son of Herman A. and Louisa R. (Trapp) Steckler. He married Carrie June Rice on April 12, 1944 at. St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel and she survives.
Herman was a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Elks Club of Mt. Carmel, Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was also on the Board of Director?s of the Wabash County Soil and Water Conservation and a Farm Bureau member for many years.
A long time farmer in Wabash County, he was an implement dealer for Minneapolis Moline from 1949 to 1950. He believed in guarding the farm land for future generations. He and June were owners of Highland Farms Inc. He farmed with his sons, Mike and Fred, until his retirement. After retirement he enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending winters at his Florida home where he had many friends from Switzerland and Germany. He was a loving father and husband and he will be missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, June; sons, Michael (Janice) and Fred (Karen); daughters, Dianna (Karl) Berberich, Janice (Doug) West, all of Mt. Carmel, Pattie (Greg) Xanders of Vincennes, IN and Jeanie (Wayne) Kennard of Mt. Carmel; brothers, Robert of Mt. Carmel and Norman of Waterloo, SC; sisters, Louise (Joe) Peter of Mt. Carmel and Virginia Cado of Alameda, CA; grandchildren, Lisa Steckler, Becky (Will) Boerner, Julie Steckler, Kristi (Dave) Masinelli, Susan (Mike) Shotts, Bonnie (Jason) Simmons, Jared (Megan) Steckler, Karla (Marc) Leighty, Tammy (Micah) Beck, Andy (Shawn) Berberich, Aaron (Sarah) Berberich, Scott (Dana) West, Hayley Kennard and Bryan Kennard; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Sylvester Steckler and two granddaughters, Ashley West and Stacey (Steckler) Sprinkle.
Funeral services will be 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at St. Mary?s Catholic Church with burial following the service in St. Mary?s Cemetery, Mt. Carmel.
Celebration of life will be from 5-8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2011 at Cunningham Funeral Home, Mt. Carmel, with a prayer service starting at 5:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary?s School Endowment or Wabash General Hospital Foundation-Oncology Department.
