Newhard, 76, South Bend, a native of Preble whose sister lives in Decatur, died Tuesday in St Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend. He once served as chairman of the board of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis and the Society for Crippled Children. He taught for 10 years before beginning a 33-year career as a principal at six schools in South Bend, including a school for crippled children. He retired in 1977, two years after winning the first Indiana Principal of the Year award. He taught during summers at universities at New York, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Colorado. He was born in Preble in 1914 and but lived in South Bend since 1934. Surviving are his wife, Anna; two daughters; and a sister Melvina Ross, 227 N 16th St. Two brothers, John and Dale Newhard, are deceased. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian church, South Bend, with burial in Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, IN.
