Robert Walsh was the fourth child of Paul and Ida Walsh, 11 years younger than any of his siblings. In fact, Bob almost thought of his sister Mildred as a second mother because she was nearly 20 when he was born.
As a child, he was close with his cousin Betty Myers, also born in 1924. "We were very close as kids," Betty said in 2007. "When I lived with Aunt Mayme and Uncle Walter (Baldwin) they were very close with the Walshes. Aunt Ida and Mildred would bring Bob over to go swimming."
Bob also became close with some of the Walshes' neighbors. Vetris and John Decker lived down the street at 818 N. Main Street with their three sons and one daughter. Because the Decker children were closer to his age than his siblings, Bob became close with the family. When the Deckers moved to Mississippi -- possibly selling the house to the Walshes. Bob's mother, Ida Walsh, died while residing at 818 N. Main with her daughter Mildred -- they invited Bob down for a summer. Later they moved to Arizona, and he continued to visit. "The Decker family always made Robert feel part of their family, in fact for as long as we can remember, dad always called Vetris ‘mom,'" wrote Bob's daughters, Donna and Melanie, in 2007.
Bob loved to attend reunions of Central High School classes. "This seemed to be very important to him to keep in contact with all his friends," said Dorothy Lilly, whose Class of 1943 Bob often joined for reunions although by her recollection, he graduated a year ahead or after her.
Bob joined the family tradition of working for the railroad initially. But he joined the Army in February 1945 toward the end of World War II. He enrolled at Evansville College in 1945, intending to study pre-med. But in 1947 he left school to help the Army in Korea where he served as a medic and was learning to be a pilot. After the war, he became an X-ray technologist and married Hazel Duncan June 30, 1951 in Evansville. Twin daughters, Donna and Melanie, were born in 1953.
On July 28, 1954, Bob took a job as a stereotyper with the Evansville Printing Corp., which printed the city's newspapers. "The stereotyping department was the step between the composing room where the pages were set in type and the pressroom where those words were put on thousands of copies of newspapers," wrote Thom Mominee, the Evansville Courier and Press director of Human Resources, in an April 2009 e-mail. "Stereotyping cast large curved lead plates which were placed on the cylinders of the press which spun around and around at high speed pressing a composition cylinder where it picked up ink and then onto the sheet of newsprint flying by at high speed transferring the ink to a readable newspaper." Bob worked as a stereotyper until May 2, 1972 when he transferred to the pressroom where he worked until Sept. 27, 1983, Mominee wrote.
Bob developed an affinity for the American Southwest through his friendship with the Decker family. In 1983, while vacationing in Albuquerque, N.M., Hazel died. Bob relocated to Mesa, Ariz., in 1983, joining his daughter Donna and her husband, Mac Russelburg, who had moved west the year before. Bob took a job with the Phoenix newspapers and enjoyed collecting southwestern bolo ties and belt buckles. He loved animals, the outdoors, historic sites and travel, especially trips to Ireland, Alaska and Colorado. "Bob came back to visit us a few times and I recall he wasn't happy with all the pollution out there," Mominee wrote. "He said the smog would settle over the entire valley for weeks on end because there was no air circulation."
He was active in the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and organizations such as the Moose, Elks and Reed lodges, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Scottish Rite and Shriners. "He was just a fun-loving guy," Mrs. Lilly recalled by phone in 2007. "It seemed that family and friends were very important to him." Mominee agreed: "Bob was a jolly sort of guy with what seemed like a perpetual grin. The last time I saw Bob I told him he could win a look-a-like contest for the captain in Gilligan's Island."
Over the last 22 years of his life he enjoyed the companionship of Rosie Davis. He is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Evansville with his parents, his sister Mildred and his wife, Hazel.
