Mary Catherine Trompeter
November 6, 1922 - January 31, 2015
Mary Catherine Trompeter was born in Rochester, New York on November 6, 1922 to George and Beatrice Doherty. She graduated from Nazareth Academy in 1940, and then trained and received her Registered Nursing credentials from St. Mary?s Hospital, Rochester, New York.
Mary Kay met her husband, Bernard, in 1942. After he served in the Navy during World War II, they were married on May 22, 1946. They moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1950, and raised their six children in Detroit and Southfield. Mary Kay and Bern were founding members of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Detroit. Later, she was active as a parishioner of St. Michael?s in Southfield and St. Fabian?s in Farmington Hills, giving service in several parish ministries including the Altar Society, delivering Holy Communion to shut-ins and serving luncheons after funeral services. She also was an early advocate of independent living for people with developmental disabilities; and was an active promoter and supporter of Community Living Centers, Inc.
Mary Kay was a generous and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and aunt. Her life was filled with family. She made sure every type of occasion was celebrated with a gathering at home, at a restaurant or at a golf course. During family vacations over the years ? East Tawas, Lake Charlevoix, Bellaire and South Haven ? Mary Kay frequently welcomed extended family and friends to join the fun. Despite her aversion to flying, Mary Kay and Bern travelled to Costa Rica, Korea, Hong Kong and London to make sure they were a part of the ex-pat life of her youngest daughter, Jeanne, son-in-law, Mark, and their grandchildren.
Mary Kay decided to take up golf as her husband neared retirement, and it soon became the center of their winter trips south and summer stays up north, as well as a good way to socialize with friends and relatives. Mary Kay also enjoyed lively games of bridge and euchre. She and Bern played regularly over the years with a large circle of friends. Euchre held a special appeal at family gatherings, and if you didn?t know how to play the game, Mary Kay insisted that anybody could learn; and, she was a great teacher! When she had to give up golf a few years ago, it gave her more time to focus her attention on another beloved summer past-time? the Detroit Tigers.
Mary Kay will be missed by her loving husband of 68 years, Bernard J., and her children, Bernard G. (Bonnie Teegen), Thomas (Jane Rushford), Daniel (Karen), Paul (Carol), Mary Louise (Christopher Rohwer) and Jeanne (Mark Cardwell). She enjoys the love and respect of her grandchildren, Michael and Katie Rohwer, Daniel Trompeter (Jessica), Elizabeth, Annie, Jeffrey, Megan and Caitlyn Cardwell, and great-grandchildren, Ada Lyn and Elias James Trompeter.
