Vernon S. Mettler (1920 - 2010)
Vernon S. Mettler, age 90, passed away on April 9, 2010, after a lengthy illness. Vern was a life-long resident of Lodi, CA.
He was born Feb.1, 1920, and attended Harmony Grove School and Lodi High School. He married Jean Stark on June 14, 1941. He was a member of Farm Bureau and Zion Reformed Church. For the last 69 years he has owned his farm and grown diversified crops such as tomatoes, beans, sugar beets as well as maintained a vineyard of table and wine grapes.
Vernon loved playing and coaching baseball. He was catcher for high school ball and continued on to Lodi's semi-pro team for Guild Wines. Later he coached Little League and Babe Ruth teams. He also enjoyed growing vegetables in his garden and propagating beautiful fuchsias and double inpatients - most of which he enjoyed giving away to family and friends. When he was not farming or playing baseball he enjoyed fishing in the area's rivers and lakes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean S. Mettler; his great-grandson, Hunter Cole; brothers: Raymond Mettler, Irvine Mettler, and Richard Mettler; and sister, Laura Quashnick.
He is survived by his children: Ken and Liz Mettler, David and Pat Mettler and George and Lynnette (Mettler) Cole; sisters, Viola Racer and Marilyn Jean Culbertson; brothers: Hubert Mettler, Lloyd Mettler, Stanley Mettler and Charles Mettler. He has five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service is planned for Friday, April 16, 2010, at Zion Reformed Church at 12:00 a.m. with Pastor Matt Duerr conducting the service. The family will have a graveside service at Lodi Memorial Cemetery on Friday April 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.
