VILLA GROVE ? Robert "Bob" Rund, 80, of Villa Grove, passed away quietly with his family surrounding his bed on Friday, June 26, 2009, at 10:10 p.m.
He is survived by his lovng wife of 57 years, Mary Margaret (Cabalek) Rund. Also surviving are his children, Roberta "Bobbie" Moore (Terry) of Normal, Phil Rund (Melanie)of Breese, Kathy Bennett (Chuck) of Pesotum, and Toni Gibbson (Ron) of Kettering, Ohio. Bob and Mary Margaret are very proud of their 23 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death is one son, Mike Rund, his wife Linda and daughters, Jamie, Brittany, and Natalie, and Jimmy Bennett (Kathy's father-in-law). Bob was in the U.S. Air Force for three years, 1947-1950. He taught hydraulics at Chanute Field, Rantoul. In January, 1949, Bob was a Hydraulics Specialist and worked on C54's during the Berlin Airlift. The Berlin Airlift (Operation Vittles) lasted for 10 months and was extremely vital to the people trapped behind the Berlin Wall, as the planes brought them coal and nonperishable foodstuff.
Bob worked at the University of Illinois for 30 years as a carpenter. He was a member of the Carpenter Union Local 44. He continued using his woodworking skills to make woodcrafts that he sold and gave to friends. Later he used these skills while volunteering at CHI (Childrens Haven International) in Reynosa, Mexico. Bob and Mary Margaret both volunteered at the home.
Bob was a member of a nondenominational group, RVICS (Roving Volunteers in Christ's Service). He continued to use his carpentry skills as he performed repairs and other carpentry work at seminary colleges and church camps in five different states. Mary Margaret also enjoyed volunteering with him.
Bob enjoyed many hobbies and outdoor activities, such as woodworking, farming, hunting for deer, quail, rabbit, and pheasant, fishing, boating, water skiing and camping. The family spent many summers camping and boating at Decatur Lake at the Joker Boat Club.
Also among his joys was watching his grandchildren play ball and perform musically. He was very proud of all of them.
The Villa Grove School Board benefited from Bob's seven years of service. Bob also spent several years as assisant Scout Master for Troop 50 in Villa Grove.
Tractors and restoring tractors were also among Bob's hobbies. He enjoyed riding the tractors in parades, taking tractor cruises through Rockville, Ind., and Marshall, Ill., and sharing all of these experiences with his grandchildren. He is a member of the East Central Illinois Two Cylinder Tractor Club as well as the I & I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club.
Bob was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church as well as the Holy Name Society.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Villa Grove, with Father Paul Skelton officiating.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2009, in the Joines Funeral Home, Route 130 South, Villa Grove, with an 8 p.m. Rosary. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery with military rites by Walter Jones VFW Post 2876.
