John Curtis Schoch
_______
Seemingly suddenly despondent because of ill health which followed a nervous breakdown last June, John Curtis Schoch 29, ended his own life about 11 o?clock Friday morning at the home of Lawrence S. Horn, 939 Charles Street, where he lived with his brother-in-law, sister and mother, by firing a charger from a 12 gauge shotgun through his heart.
Death occurred within a few seconds after his mother, attracted by the noise of his body falling, reached his side. The young man arose Friday morning seemingly in his usual health, appeared cheerful and pleasant and after reading for a time and resting went upstairs where he undressed with the exception of underwear. From his own room he went to another where he obtained the shotgun belonging to Mr. Horn. The muzzle was placed against his chest directly over this heart and the trigger pulled in some manner. Mrs. Viona Schoch, his mother, happened to be ascending the stairs at the time and heard the noise of the fall of her son?s body. She hurried to his room, found his clothes and pushing open the door of another room found him dying on the floor. The noise of the gun?s discharge had been muffled against his body.
Mr. Schoch was born Feb. 15, 1906 in Bluffton, Ind., to George L. and Viona Schoch. He was unmarried. The father preceded him in death. He was graduated from the Huntington high school in 1924 and later from the apprentice school of the General Electric in Fort Wayne where he was employed until last June when a nervous breakdown caused him to bedfast for three months. The breakdown was his second, the first having occurred six years ago. Surviving besides the mother and sister at whose home he died are two other sisters, Mrs. H.M. Shultz of this city and Mr. Charles Denzel, Forth Wayne, and a brother Earl Schoch, of this city. A sister, Lela, is dead.
The body will be taken to the home of Mrs. Shultz, 947 Charles Street, at noon Saturday. Funeral services will be held at the Shultz residence at 10 o?clock Monday morning with the Rev. John Paul Pack officiating and interment will be at Ossian.
