CLIFTON SPRINGS - Mary A. Bird, 87, died on Monday (October 4, 2010) at the Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic after an extended illness.
Mary was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to many.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 7) at the Cheney Funeral Home, 70 Main St., Phelps. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Clifton Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lynn Spence officiating. Burial will be in the Pearl Street Cemetery in Clifton Springs.
Memorial donations may be made to the Clifton Springs United Methodist Church, Rainbow Project 1, E. Main St., Clifton Springs 14432.
Mary was born on July 11, 1923, in Rochester, the daughter of the late George and Leona Schraeder Schwallie. She was a member of the Clifton Springs United Methodist Church and very active in the Methodist Women. She was a World War II veteran of the Women's Army Corps. She was self-employed as a caterer. Mary created many special memories for families through her catering. She also sold Avon for over 30 years in the Village of Clifton Springs. Mary walked her Avon route throughout the whole village, she never drove. Mary could always be found in her kitchen making soup or delivering it to people that were sick or in need.
She is survived by her children: Lonnie McPherson of Rochester, Susan Bright of Clifton Springs, Steve (Lori) Bird of Phelps and Kathy Mattoon of Fairport; two grandsons, Michael McPherson of Los Angeles, Calif. and Andy (Lisa Cheetham) Mattoon of Phelps; great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Mary Mattoon; brothers: George and Donald Schwallie of Rochester; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hildreth Roll of Clifton Springs, Betty Steele of Waterloo, Dick Bird of Kansas, and Marilyn Bird and Wendell Gray, both of Clifton Springs; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; sister, Helen Rice; and grandson, Josh Mattoon.
