- [S927] Obituary.
Vivian Stevenson Delbrook Age 99, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2006. She was born Setpember 27, 1906 to Charles and Nellie Wilson Stevenson. She was an Indianapolis resident her entire life. She was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School and then attended Butler University, graduating in 1927. Hers was the last class to graduate from the Irvington campus. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Gamma Chapter, for 82 years. She was also a member of the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter and a donor to the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation where she recently endowed scholarships for deserving students in the Gamma chapter at Butler. At Butler University, she was a member of the Fairview Heritage Society and the Ovid Butler Society. Vivian S. Delbrook also has endowed the Visiting Writers Series at Butler, giving students, faculty and staff members as well as the Indianapolis community opportunities to hear celebrated writers speak about their works. The college of Liberal Arts and Sciences honored her with a plaque bearing her name that hangs in the Writer's Studio in Jordan Hall. At Butler, Vivian majored in English and wanted to be a teacher, but she couldn't find a teaching job, so she was thankful to find a job at Indiana Bell where she worked up to Chief Observer for the Commercial Department. Her job took her all over the state. She worked there 33 years, retiring in 1961. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and was also a volunteer at Winona Memorial Hospital starting in 1963. She was married to Donald D. Delbrook September 20, 1930. He preceded her in death in 1982. In addition to reading, she loved to travel. She has been in every state. She made several trips to Haiti and on her first trip she met with a guide named Raymond and he took her all over the country. He told her how poor they were and how badly they needed medical supplies, minerals, vitamins and all kinds of medicine. She sent them many boxes of medical supplies and would sometimes take them personally. She was always ready to lend a helping hand. She traveled to Europe with friends and spent a month in Alaska alone and took a freighter to South America but had to get off the boat and fly home because it was going too slow and she was running out of vacation time. After she retired, she and her husband took a 3 month cruise to Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Hawaii. She was a member of First Friends Church. She has no living relatives but has a goddaughter, Pamela Wilbur, who lives in Lubbock, Texas. She has many friends and will be sorely missed. Funeral services will be at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at 12:00 noon, with visitation one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Butler University, the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation, or First Friends Church.
