Note: From the Herald, Tuesday, August 13, 1957: "Edward J. Alles, 29, of R. 4, Jasper, became Dubois county's third traffic victim of the year when his car crashed into a concrete culvert abutment near Crystal around 1 o'clock this morning. The investigating State Police trooper, Wayne Stalcup of French Lick, said that Alles, who was driving west toward Jasper, apparently was going too fast to make the curve as he approached the east town limits of Crystal. The office said that skid marks on the highway showed he had applied the brakes in an effort to slow his speed. His car, 1953 Chrysler, crashed into the abutment with such force that it required an hour for a wrecker operator and several assistants to get the body out of the car. The culvert is the first one east of the east town limits of Crystal. Coroner E. H. Schmutzler. . . said Ed Alles apparently died instantly of internal injuries. He suffered no visible head injuries except for a cut under his nose, but his left leg was fractured in several places. . .Ed Alles was born in Jasper on February 21, 1928, the son of Mrs. Anna Rasche Alles and the late Jacob Alles. He was graduated from St. Joseph School and Jasper High School and later attended St. Joseph College at Rennselaer. Ed was a member of the Jasper Wildcats basketball team for three seasons. . . Following his graduation from high school he was employed by the Checker Truck Line. Later he worked as a bartender at the American Legion Club, and in recent months had been serving in that capacity at the Schnitzelbank. Survivors include his wife, the former Catherine Mehringer, to whom he was married on June 2, 1951; a son, Gary, age 3 1/2; a 1 1/2 year old daughter, Pamela; his mother, Mrs. Anna Alles; and five brothers, Hilary of Detroit, and Jim, Norbert, Jerome and Charles, all of Jasper. One brother, Oliver, is deceased. . . Services will be held in Holy Family Parish Church at 9 A.M. Friday, followed by burial in Fairview cemetery."
