- [S927] Obituary.
Note: From the Herald, Friday, Feb. 5, 1960: "James E. Alles, 39, a World War II veteran and one-time candidate for mayor of Jasper, died at 9:45 a.m. today at his home at 605 west Ninth street as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage which he suffered around 5:30 this morning. Last October, when Mr. Alles went to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for a check-up, it was discovered that he had leukemia. He later spent some time at the I.U. Medical Center in Indianapolis and in Memorial Hospital in Jasper. He was released from the local hospital last December 7, and returned to his home. According to his physician, Jim had been getting along exceedingly well recently, and had had no blood transfusions for the past four weeks. Three weeks ago he attended a basketball game, and last week he took part in the American Legion cinch tournament. For the past three Sundays he had been able to attend Mass in St. Joseph Church, where he was a counsellor, and had attended church services on Wednesday of this week. James E. Alles was born in Jasper on March 25, 1920, the son of Anna Rasche Alles and the late Jacob Alles. He was inducted into the Army on June 25, 1942, and served for almost three years, including service in the South Pacific. He helped to form the Jasper Jaycees and served on the first board of directors. He served at one time as Red Cross fund drive chairman for Dubois county during its annual campaign. He was a member of the group that helped to form the Jasper Civic Sports group in 1949 and served for several years as its president. Mr. Alles coached American Legion and K. of C. basketball teams, including the team that won the K. of C. state championship in 1949. He was a former finance officer of the Legion. He served on the City Council for four years during the administration of Mayor Herbert Thyen and was president of the council for one year. He also served as a member of the Board of Public Works. In the spring of 1955 he decided to run for the office of mayor. In the May primary he defeated his nearest competitor, Edward J. Lorey, who was running for reelection, by 16 votes. The count was 1,006 for Mr. Alles and 990 for Mr. Lorey. Later, Mr. Lorey came out as an Independent candidate and in the general election he beat Jim Alles by 36 votes to gain reelection. Jim was a member of the Columbia Club and the Dubois County Country Club. Surviving are the wife, the former Mary Schuetter, to whom he was married on January 19, 1946; three daughters, Deborah, Barbara and Martha Jane, and a son, John, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Anna Alles; and four brothers, Hilary of Detroit and Norbert, Jerome and Charles of Jasper. A brother, Oliver, died in 1944, while serving in the Army, and another brother, Ed, was killed in a highway accident on August 13, 1957. His father died in 1941. Services will be held in St. Jospeh Church at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery."
