- [S927] Obituary.
Note: From the Jasper Herald, Friday, November 17, 1944: "Cpl. Oliver (Catty) Alles died at 3:30 A.M. Tuesday in the AAF Regional and Air Debarkation Hospital at Hamilton Field, Calif., his mother, Mrs. Anna Alles, was informed Tuesday morning. He was brought to the hospital Oct. 23 in a serious condition after becoming ill last June while serving with the 253rd construction engineers in the South Pacific area. He underwent four operations in the South Pacific area, including one on Guadalcanal, and several more after returning to the hospital. His mother and his fiancee, Miss Mary Ann Schuetter, returned to Jasper Sunday after spending two weeks with him. When they left last Thursday, his condition was improving, and physicians at the hospital were planning to send him to an Indiana hospital within a week or two. His mother and Miss Schuetter had an opportunity to return by train provided they left last Thursday. Otherwise, they would not have been able to make reservations for another two weeks. Since hospital physicians were planning to send Oliver to Indiana within a week or two, they took the train at that time to be sure to be back in Indiana by the time Oliver arrived in this state. Oliver submitted to an operation last Thursday for removal of an abcess on his diaphram, and was undoubtedly too weak to overcome the effects of this, the latest in a long series of operations. He suffered intensely during the last few months, and for several weeks had been under an oxygen tent almost constantly. Cpl. Alles was born in Jasper on September 22, 1916, the son of Anna Rasche Alles and the late Jacob J. Alles. He was graduated from the St. Joseph parochial schools and Jasper Academy. For several years he was co-owner of the Recreation Club, before being inducted into the army on November 18, 1942. He went overseas in April, 1943, and after serving on New Caledonia for a time, he was transferred to the Russells group of islands. Surviving besides his mother are six brothers, four of whom are in service. They are Capt. Hilary P., who is with the First Army in Germany; Pvt. James E., New Caledonia; Pvt. Norbert C., Hawaii; Pvt. Jerome, Camp Croft, N.C., and Edward and Charles, at home. The body will be returned to this city for military funeral services and burial, but up to yesterday the family had not been informed of the time of arrival." (Oliver Alles was engaged to Mary Ann Schuetter at the time of his death. She later married his brother, James.)
