Note: "In the year 1844 Maria Schlegel was born on the 7th of June. . ." (Journal of August Betz) From the Jasper Herald, Friday, August 5, 1927:"Aged Celestine Lady Is Called By Death - Mrs. Mary (Schlegel) Bates died at the home of her son August A. Bates, one mile south of Celestine, on the old Bates homestead at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 31, after an illness of several months at the advanced age of 83 years, 1 month and 24 days. She was born in Reute, Baden, Germany, on June 7, 1844 and came to this country with her parents, Joseph and Madgalena Schlegel, in a sailing vessel when she was about ten years of age, and settled at Celestine where Mr. Schlegel engaged in the wagon making trade. On April 21, 1863, she was united in marriage with August Bates at the St. Celestine's church, and twelve children were born to them, ten of whom survive: Joseph of Schnellville; John, James and Mrs. Elizabeth Cornet of Indianapolis; Mrs. Katherine Prechtel of Los Angeles, Calif.; Conrad, Mrs. Margaret Hochgesang and Mrs. Rose Goeppner, of Jasper; August, of Celestine, and Leo, of Louisville. One son, William, and one daughter, Mrs. Mary Alles, and their father, preceded her in death. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Rose Strack and Mrs. Barbara Becker of Indianapolis, 40 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was a life-long member of the Catholic church and was a member of the Ladies Society of St. Celestine's church. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother and a good neighbor. The funeral services were held at St. Celestine's church Wednesday morning, Rev. A. Schnellenberger officiating. After the requiem mass, the remians were carried to its last resting place in St. Celestine's cemetery by her six surviving sons."
