Hi Ursula:
I really couldn?t send you a suggestion, because it involved too many
people.
I have been trying to figure out the Grosch/Karcher connection. As I
told you, the 204 Montrose Avenue on wills had my suspicions raised.
I offer the following as some possibilities.
I will begin with the 204 Montrose Avenue Address. Emil?s address was
204 Montrose, according to his will in 1921. I did send you that link.
Yesterday, I was able to establish that Louise (Louisa) Grosch was his
sister, not his wife and that they lived together. Her birth year would
be about 1878 (according to the censuses found, showing Emil as her
brother) and she would be the oldest. However, she might have been born
in 1875 and I will get to that later on.
I happened upon a Katie Karcher?s will in the NY Kings County records
(family search). She died in 1902. If you search that database, she
comes up first. In her will, the heirs listed were: Margaret Karcher,
mother (166 Leonard St.), William Karcher, brother (Hamburg and Ralph
Avenues), Jacobine Karcher, sister (166 Leonard St.), Hannah Stoetzer,
sister (166 Leonard St.) and Louisa Grosch, niece (204 Montrose Ave.) I
have to believe that this is Emil and George?s sister.
I think it is very likely, that George Grosch, Sr. (1846-1905) was
previously married to Louisa Karcher (daughter of Margaret Karcher,
mentioned above). I found his marriage date (agrees with your records)
to Caroline Karcher, but I also discovered another marriage record:
Karcher Louise Dec 28 1875 2593 Kings/Gresch George Dec 18 1875 Kings
2593 (His name listed as Gresch, not Grosch. I did the search on her.)
Then a death date for a Louisa Grosch in the index:
Groesch Louisa 27 y Nov 26 1876 11004 Kings (b: 1849-1850), see 1870 and
1880 census records below.
George married Caroline in 1877.
My next step was to locate Margaret Karcher associated with some of the
names in Katie?s will and I believe that I did locate the family. In
some cases, year of birth varies, but we have seen that many time before.
These are all for Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY.
1870 Census: Michael Karcher (1828) from Baden, Margaret (1824), Louise
(1850), Carolina (1852), Mary (1855), William (1859). Catherine (1862),
John (1864), Jacobine (1867)
1880 Census: Michael Karcher (1825), Margaret (1827), Catherine (1862),
John (1864), Phoebe (1866), Hannah (1870).
Note: I believe that Phoebe is really Jacobine, but I don?t have
access to view the actual record. On the other hand, it might really be
written as Phoebe.
1892 NYS Census: Margaret Karcher (1828), Catherine (1862), Jennie
(1872).
1900 Census: look for Margaret Marcher (the K wasn?t closed by
enumerator) -
Margaret Marcher ( April 1825), Binie* (August 1866) and Lula or Lulu
Groesch (November 1875), listed as granddaughter. *Binie is probably a
nickname for Jacobine.
Catherine is the Katie whose will was mentioned. I think that Louise
(Louisa) Karcher was married to George Grosch.
Louisa Grosch?s birth varies between 1875-1878. Conjecture might be
that she could have been George and Louisa?s child born out of wedlock
a month before they married, but a different date was used to indicate
that she was Caroline?s daughter.
Wonder if Ludwig b: 1829 in Baden, could have been Michael Karcher?s
brother.
