Cornelia J. Bratten passed away unexpectedly on August 5, 2011 at her home in Spokane.
Cornelia, or Corky as she was known to friends and family, was born July 23, 1922 in Canton, OH. She was the youngest of eight surviving children born to Cornelius and Helen (Clark) Thouvenin. In 1940, Corky married Jack E. Bratten and soon after they moved to Chicago. Jack was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1942 and while he was serving in Europe, Corky joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and was stationed at Headquarters Air Transport Command in Washington DC. After WWII, educational and employment opportunities kept Corky and Jack moving to numerous places around the country, including Denver, CO; Berkeley and Santa Monica, CA; Battle Creek, MI; Canoga Park, CA; Gresham, OR and finally the Spokane area in 1972. Corky was a homemaker and also held jobs as switchboard operator at Cowell Hospital, Berkeley; Northridge Hospital, Northridge, CA and Lakeland Village, Medical Lake, WA. She was active in volunteer organizations including Catholic Charities and Spokane Audubon Society. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral Parish where she served as a greeter. Corky was a longtime member of the Spokane Club and could often be found in the athletic center walking on the treadmill or clocking miles on the rowing machine.
Corky is preceded in death by her husband, Jack and an infant son, Jack, Jr.
She is survived by her children: Pamela (Curt) Vail of Colville, WA and Timothy (Gabriela) Bratten of Balcarce, Argentina; grandchildren: Jason, Lisette, Karen and Cecilia; great grandchildren: Alexander and Arianna; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, August 16, at 1:00 pm and will be conducted at Holy Cross Mausoleum Chapel, 7200 N. Wall St., Spokane.
