WOODSFIELD - Helma G. Stephen Christman, 91, of Ohio 145, Miltonsburg community, Woodsfield, died Saturday (March 1, 2003) at Barnesville Hospital. She was born April 7, 1911, in Monroe County to Wilbert and Anna Hannahs Stephen. She attended Seneca Valley Church of Christ and Bush Church of Christ in later years. She taught school for 31 years, starting at the Miltonsburg two-room school. When it was closed, she went to Woodsfield Elementary, where she taught third grade. She was a quilter and her attention to detail and her skill making small stitches combined to produce several one-of-a-kind masterpiece quilts. She was the oldest living resident of Miltonsburg and was recognized as such by the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 2001.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold P. Christman; two sisters, Opal Johnson and Maxine Christman; and one brother, Clesson Stephen.
She is survived by three sons, Walt Christman and his wife, Nancy, of New Martinsville, W.Va., Gene Christman and his wife, Danna, of Baltimore, Md.,
and Gordon Christman and his wife, Sharon, of Houston, Texas; one sister, Neva Gray of Columbus; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, 100 S. Paul St., Woodsfield, with Minister Delmar "Bud" Burke officiating. Burial is in
Oaklawn Cemetery in Woodsfield. Friends will be received from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
