Harold M. Mettler
U.S. Veteran
Harold M. Mettler 88 of Wessington Springs died Tuesday afternoon at the Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center in Wessington Springs.. Funeral Services will be held Saturday November 29, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Sara Olson Dean officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 at the church with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Harold was born September 15, 1926 in Wessington Springs South Dakota, to Henry and Clara (Redman) Mettler. He attended country school and graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1944. Following graduation he served in the US Army during World War II. Upon his discharge in 1946 he returned home and began farming in partnership with his father in western Jerauld County, and later took over the farming and ranching operation. On November 20, 1955, Harold was united in marriage to Patricia Magee in Wessington Springs and to this union two daughters, Linda and Jolene were born. They made their home on the family farm until 1991, at which time they retired to Wessington Springs. Baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Reformed Church, his journey of faith led him to the United Church of Christ where he was committed to the service of his church. He was an active member serving as a Sunday school teacher and on various church boards throughout his life. As a Jerauld County Commissioner for 13 years Harold was involved in promoting the current clinic and in the planning, construction, and opening of the present Weskota Memorial Hospital. Harold served on the Huron Regional Medical Center Board of Directors for several terms. He was appointed by Governor Wollman to serve on the Resource Development Advisory Council in Pierre from 1978-1981. He served on the District 111 Crime Commission from 1971-1979. He was a member of Willam Fee American Legion Post 14, Dunham Historical Society and Wessington Springs Senior Citizen Center. Harold will be remembered for his faith filled, gentle spirit and of course his quick wit. He loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed many hunting and fishing adventures. Woodworking and attending activities of his grandchildren brought him great enjoyment during retirement. Harold is survived by his wife Pat of Wessington Springs, two daughters; Linda and her husband Paul Schueth of Winner and Jolene and her husband Jim Sutton of Watertown; 6 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, one sister Elaine Roetman and a number of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers Harold and his family request memorials be directed to UCC Church, Weskota Foundation or Senior Center.
