HORNICK, Iowa -- Iona M. Sulsberger, 72, of Hornick died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Hornick United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Wood Funeral Home in Sloan, Iowa.
Iona was born Sept. 30, 1932, in Trenton, Mo., the daughter of M.J. "Jean" and Wilma (Cox) Hobbs. She grew up in the rural Hornick, where she attended Brown Country School, Hornick Public School and graduated from Hornick-Holly Springs Consolidated School.
She was married to John J. Sulsberger and two sons were born to that union, Larry L. and Terry T. Sulsberger. Her husband, John, died in March 1976. She remained a widow until her death.
She was a homemaker, loving mother and a proud grandmother. She attended Western Iowa Tech Community College and worked as a cook and dietary assistant for many years at the Woodbury County Care Facility.
She loved to cook and watch cooking shows on television. She also enjoyed watching the wildlife that came into her Loess Hills yard. She enjoyed music, watching her sons' high school sports events and in later years, enjoyed watching professional basketball on television.
She is survived by her son, Larry Sulsberger of Hornick; two brothers, Mervin Hobbs of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dennis Hobbs of Treynor, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; a son, Terry; and a sister, Donna Hobbs.
